Tea and girl talk

I came across biorhythms quite by chance. I was sitting with my sister, sipping tea and chatting about relationships, when she showed me a book. A friend had given it to her, and she wondered whether there was anything in it.

I've always believed that trying to predict the future was a negative and a debilitating occupation, so I was sceptical of my sister's new-found interest. If biorhythms were just another cheap idea to reduce our control and limit our life choices, I could easily disprove them. The calculations and charts of biorhythmic theory lent themselves to logical scrutiny. Here was a scam that I could untangle without getting bogged down in mumbo-jumbo terminology.

The reality was a little bit more complicated. Even using the book's reference tables, there were endless strings of additions, subtractions, multiplications, and divisions to work through. To recreate biorhythm charts and compatibility percentage reports was tedious and painstaking work.

Engineering calculations by day, biorhythmic calculations by night

At the time, I was about to become a mature student in the Department of Industrial Design Engineering at Brunel University. After a career in textiles, I was looking for a new direction.

In my spare time at university I played with my petty biorhythmic project. Much to my surprise, I found that the results were consistently accurate at describing my own and my friends' relationships. What's more, the biorhythmic analysis of how I was feeling, thinking, and performing on any given day matched reality.

Now I saw that biorhythm theory was proving to be exceptionally accurate and reliable. It was a turning point in my life - although the realisation came later when I became ill with a recurrent chest infection. I abandoned campus life and returned to central London to recuperate. And those intriguing biorhythms travelled with me. Even when my temperature was at its highest, I couldn't ignore the mysterious conundrum of biorhythms.

If biorhythms were so accurate, how come no one else was using them? (I did not know that many successful businesses and individuals were already using them in many parts of the world, particularly Japan.)

Why were they not being used to highlight the problem areas in relationships, or to show people how to accommodate their differences? (I was already reaping the benefits; my own relationships had dramatically improved because I now understood the strengths and weaknesses of those relationships.)

Why were people not using them to find their most compatible partners? (I was a recent divorcee and was tentatively looking for my own new love partner.)

Complexity and constancy

The reason was simple: those tables and calculations were just too complex. It took ages to produce a single result, and the chances of making a mistake were high. One small slip would undermine the result. Worst of all, the results were always represented by sine waves in numbers and percentages. It was far too abstract for daily use.

I reviewed the literature on biological cycles and chronobiology, and found that orthodox medicine had developed an interest in circadian (daily) rhythms. Unfortunately most of the research was based on the rectal temperatures of rats, and the lifespan of fruit flies! Only a handful of researchers had attempted to look at practical human issues by placing subjects in an isolation chamber, well out of the reach of external influences. Few people understood the crucial difference between biological cycles that reset themselves according to external clues (exogenous rhythms) and cycles that remain constant throughout life (endogenous rhythms).

Although the existence of endogenous infradian rhythms (constant cycles that last several days) had been known for centuries, there were few scientific observations on human beings. But then the science of neuro-endocrinology is still in its infancy - and the study of infradian rhythms and their role in human performance and compatibility is a major task.

Understanding the human psyche may have been low on the scientific agenda, but unravelling the roles of biological clocks and the pituitary and hypothalamus glands was not. Research in this area is now more intensive than ever. It's produced successful treatments for a range of conditions from jet lag to cancer.
