11 July 2001 Love or a biorhythmic puffball?

This is the flirtation that the Big Brother team have been praying for: a ratings-boosting romance between Helen and Paul.

So, are we seeing a genuine love affair unfold on our TV screens?

Well, they do have plenty in common: two good-looking, image- and clothes-conscious people, both skilled in their own specialist fields. And they're both free - or, in Helen's case, 'free-ish'.

Ah...and there's one other helpful factor: the pair are cooped up in the Big Brother house.

Would their paths have crossed in the real world? Highly unlikely. What we're seeing is a classic case of circumstantial lust. At least this is not a deliberate or sinister liaison. This one's the result of youthful optimism and insecurity under an extraordinary set of circumstances.

Paul and Helen's biorhythmic love compatibility rating is VERY DIVERSE (see below). They are, in effect, biorhythmic opposites. In popular lore, opposites attract; in reality, not for long.

Biomatch.com's research shows that, in the game of love, similar personal preferences and underlying biorhythmic compatibility are the essential factors behind happier and longer-lasting relationships.

Of course, those 'opposites' who live together within their own separate worlds (the Mars and Venus of those DIY relationship manuals?) do sometimes stay together longer than expected. It all goes wrong when they see what a right old romp their more savvy peers are having. That's when they learn that compatible couples with natural biorhythmic partners enjoy every bit of their shared world.

Yes, Biomatch.com dismisses the idea that 'men are from Mars and women from Venus' as total tosh. We are from the same planet - and the sooner we escape from the pigeonholes into which our upbringing has put us, the better. Reconnection to our own unique and personal nature is the only reliable route to a meaningful and lasting relationship.

So where does that leave Helen and Paul?

We've all seen Paul's inability to relate to people, especially under the pressure of being the most voted housemate. Helen has used his insecurities to get closer. In return, she expects Paul to boost her confidence by treating her as the cute-little-blonde-girl. She knows that's what Paul likes, but that's not enough. She needs Paul to keep reminding her that the image she has chosen is still working.

Biomatch biorhythmic analysis chart for Paul and Helen:

Big Brother housemates Helen and Paul compatibility chart by Biomatch

And this is the explanation of their compatibility chart, taken direct from Biomatch.com online software:

Love compatibility rating: VERY DIVERSE

The upside: You were fascinated by each other when you first met, because you were both caught up in the same set of exceptional circumstances. It's likely that the factors that drew you together, still hold you together. It could be social status or image, a cause you believe in, or some other thing or person you both care about. These factors are important to you and vital to your relationship. So long as they continue, you will be happy.

The downside: How much energy have you got? This relationship is hard work. Unless you enjoy role-playing, and are superbly self-confident, you'd do well to rethink the whole thing. Your time together, though exhilarating in short bursts, requires a lot of effort to run smoothly. You may be fascinated by one another, yet you have virtually nothing in common. Your relationship could collapse if the elements that hold you together become irrelevant. Their loss may expose the shallowness of what lies beneath.

How to survive: For this relationship to survive, the circumstances that existed when you first met and your approach towards them must remain the same. By spending too much time together, you burn yourselves out. Allow each other complete independence and individuality of expression. Be prepared to find support and positive feedback from outside this relationship.

30 June 2001 The Bubble bursts

The public vote has ended Paul "Bubble" Ferguson's dreams of winning £70,000.

Like everyone else, we expected the house live-wire to survive the vote. Perhaps Bubble's supporters failed to phone in because they imagined his place was secure.

Brian was clearly exasperated by the decision. In a conversation with Dean, he wondered whether the public preferred to watch a houseful of walking dead.

His fears may be close to the mark. It seems that Channel 4 viewers value the façade of stiff upper lip over joking and light-hearted banter.

Will the spirit of Bubble, patron saint of bad hats, pranksters, and the 'Church of Bubble', live on - or will he be discarded for daring to play himself on TV?

Biorhythmically, on the chuck-out day, Paul and Bubble were level-pegging with two negative (intellectual-and-physical, physical-and-emotional, respectively) and one positive period each. That put their chances of survival about equal - a fact reflected in the closeness of the viewers' votes.

Bubble's departure affects Brian more than most. He's lost his best buddy, and he's now slipped to third position in terms of overall compatibility. But it might not all work against him. Elizabeth may now switch her vote to Josh in an effort to knock her closet rival off his high horse.

28 June 2001 Sugar Daddy

Win or lose, Dean O'Loughlin has secured his place in history. He'll be listed in the next edition of the Guinness Book of Records as the builder of the world's tallest sugar-cube tower.

Biomatch.com predicted that Dean was about to enjoy his best week yet. When he made his record-breaking tower, he was in the middle of a triple positive biorhythmic phase. The moral is: if you want to get into the Guinness Book of Records, make sure your rhythms are positive when you make the attempt - and during your practice sessions.

The fact that Dean's training period also coincided with his biorhythmic highs was a crucial factor in his success. Everything was working in his favour: an intellectual high which enabled him to design a stable tower; a physical high which ensured superb hand and eye co-ordination; and an emotional high which kept him quietly optimistic throughout.

Dean's Biomatch infradian biorhythms chart during his practice period said:

Intellectually, you are in the ascending positive phase.

Physically, you are in the ascending positive phase.

Emotionally, you are in the ascending positive phase.

Mind Status: Your brain is sharp and alert.

Action: Now is the time to explore new ideas and make decisions.

Body Status: You are full of energy and stamina.

Action: Make the most of sports and vigorous activities.

Spirit Status: You are optimistic and cheerful.

Action: Meet new people, or cheer up old friends; today is for socialising.

26 June 2001 Elizabeth: slave to the rhythm

Elizabeth didn't feel too good on the morning of Sunday 24th June. She told her housemates that she felt more irritable than she had ever done since coming into the Big Brother house. Her housemates automatically assumed it was something to do with her menstrual cycle.

They were right about cycles, but wrong about the source. It was Elizabeth's infradian biorhythms that had put her out of sorts.

During the preceding weeks, Elizabeth had only ever experienced one mini-critical period at a time in the Big Brother house. But that Sunday morning, she was passing through a double negative mini-critical period on her physical and intellectual cycles. There's no mistaking the feelings that that combination might produce, and Elizabeth was spot-on when she described it as her worst day so far.

Her description of how she felt shows that she understood her intellectual and physical status. She was lucky that her emotional cycle was in the ascending-positive period, so she was able to shake off her negativity and get on with the day.

Luckier still ... that was the only double negative mini-critical period that Elizabeth will have to endure throughout the entire game. In fact, she'll be going through the highs of a double-positive on the 27th July - the final day of the show!

19 June 2001 House of biorhythmic horror

Two weeks in a row, Biomatch.com correctly predicted the nominations and the evictions from the Big Brother house. But this week - well, things went a little wild.

Our analysis of the group dynamics shows that, in this litter, as in any other, top dogs are just as likely to be squeezed out as the biorhythmic runts. It was just a question of when the underlings would begin to turn.

To make matters worse, Narinder, Brian, Elizabeth, Paul, Bubble, and Dean are each passing through critical and/or negative phases on two out of their three infradian biorhythmic cycles. We might as well have tossed a coin to predict which housemates are most likely to get on everyone else's nerves.

Elizabeth and Dean have got more to come, with double critical days around the eviction day. After that, it's another week of turmoil for all of them apart from Dean. So, life in the Big Brother household will continue its unpredictable, roller-coaster ride for a few more days yet.

We knew that Narinder's sexual rivalry with Amma and Helen would cause problems sooner or later; but it still looked as if Dean would be first for the elbow because of his low physical compatibility with the group. The household is not yet ready to throw out his steadying influence û and he has strengthened his position by building new alliances.

Dean's next bad patch comes up around the 12th of July. If he can get through that unscathed, you can expect to see him amongst the final three.

Bubble is in a triple critical phase right now - which explains why he had a mighty tumble and hurt himself yesterday. His performance in the diary room shows how his lack of intellectual compatibility with the group is beginning to get to him.

This past week has shown us all how vulnerable and physically needy we become when trapped in a confined space with total strangers. There is no real sexual chemistry between any of the sexually complementary housemates (we are assuming Josh is more gay than heterosexual), but that doesn't stop them becoming fiercely jealous when a physically compatible housemate directs his or her attentions elsewhere.

Elizabeth wisely chose a positive outlet for her frustrations. The offer of a sensual massage satisfied her own and her housemates' needs for physical contact without appearing pushy.

13 June 2001 Josh - the joker in the pack

New boy, Josh, has unexpectedly stirred the simmering Big Brother pot. With film star looks, expensive designer gear, and ambiguous sexuality, Josh is Big Brother's wild card. For Brian and the girls, there's a new fizz in the sexual chemistry, that'll take some time to resolve.

Narinder, Amma, and Helen are sexually compatible with Josh - but not Brian. The best Brian can expect is friendship because the pair do share a good overall compatibility.

Narinder is a man's woman, and she excels in flirtatiousness. Her sexual compatibility with Josh is a sizzling 100%, but his presence has so far just made her life more difficult.

When Josh declared that Amma is the one he'd most like to sleep with, Narinder was crestfallen. The blow added to her fear that she would be nominated. For Narinder, life in the Big Brother household was looking bleak. It's easy to understand why she realised how much she missed her husband. Despite possessing the highest overall compatibility rating, her low physical compatibility with the men in the group has left her with far too much bottled up sexual energy. How will she resolve the problem? Will she flirt with Josh, or will pride hold her back?

Josh has the second highest overall compatibility score in the house. His average physical compatibility is higher with the girls than the boys. He may find that his feelings are more heterosexual than he may have planned or hoped!

Biomatch.com suspect that Amma and Narinder are set to become rivals for Josh's attentions. But Narinder probably won't make it: the likely outcome is a long-term alliance between Amma and Josh.

2 June 2001 Calm after the storm: Penny and Stuart kiss and make up!

Despite what they think, Penny and Stuart are extremely compatible! If the circumstances are right, they could easily become an item. We've all seen Penny switching her attentions to Paul. Of the housemates, only Stuart shows any sign of resentment. And yet, he seems blissfully unaware of his jealous reaction to Penny's betrayal.

1 June 2001 Nominations:

Yes, Biomatch guessed the nominees correctly!

How did we do it? Simple: Penny has the lowest physical compatibility, and Helen has the lowest intellectual and overall compatibility, with the rest of the housemates.

Biorhythmic analysis shows how people with less compatibility rarely gel within a group, no matter how sparkling their personality. The thing that counts is how the rest of the group perceive you.

When you live in a confined space, it's essential to have a good average physical compatibility, or you'll never get on with your housemates. Penny's presence was always going to be resented; and there was no way that she could compensate through her conduct.

Helen felt that no one took her seriously because she was blonde. Forget your preconceptions about blondes and intelligence, Helen simply had the lowest average intellectual compatibility with her housemates - and that would have applied whatever her hair colour.

30 May 2001 What's going on with Penny and Paul ?

There may be plenty of fooling around and outward sauciness between Penny and Paul, but Biomatch.com thinks it's all show. Penny is just diverting her sexual interest in Stuart and Dean to a safe harbour. There's no doubt that she and Paul are ideally suited as friends û but that's as far as it goes. Unlucky Paul doesn't have a single sexual match in the household, so he's bound to lap up the attention he's been getting from Penny.

How will the rest of the household react ?

Biomatch.com reckons that most of the housemates now want to see the back of Penny, even Paul, who may try to disguise his attitude. Penny has the lowest overall physical compatibility rating with the housemates. Add in the fact that the 8th June is, for Penny, a triple critical day, and her chances of surviving the public vote become very slim.

30 May 2001 Paul hurts himself while posing for photos diary for Big Brother

You can see what went wrong at the photoshoot, when you look at Paul's Biomatch Biorhythms on the day of his accident:

Intellectually you are in the ascending negative phase, Physically in the negative mini critical phase, Emotionally in the descending negative phase.

Mind Status: You lack perception, your concentration is limited, and your memory faulty
Action: Your judgment is unsound; postpone important decisions if you can. (To play with inflatable balls or not to play with inflatable balls?)

Body Status: Your stamina levels are at their minimum.
Action: Take plenty of rest and avoid dangerous activities. (Playing with inflatable balls are more dangerous than one might think !)

Spirit Status: You feel pessimistic and sad.
Action: This is the day to share your problems with trusted friends and family. (Thank heavens Penny is there to look after him.... )

30 May 2001 Narinder: annoyed about her housemates getting her name wrong

Narinder is complaining because she is going through an emotionally and intellectually negative phase, yet she is on a physical high. There's no physical chemistry between her and any of the men in the household, so she's bottling her sexual energy up. If she's not careful, her frustration may tempt her housemates to vote her out.

30 May 2001 Penny and Helen: tears for fears

The housemates think Penny has had a boob job. It's not surprising that she reacts with tears: she's on her emotionally lowest ebb. It's not a good time for personal comments, however light-hearted.

Helen lets the fire go out. That's not surprising either, she is going through an emotionally and intellectually critical phase.
